Searching for VCE practice exams can lead you to paid exam packs, and it's easy to come away thinking that's where practice papers come from. Your exams are set by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA), though, and VCAA posts its past papers on its own website for free, along with reports on how students went and the study design each exam is written from. A study design is VCAA's official description of a subject: what's taught, what you need to show you can do and how it's assessed.

The directory lists free VCAA and State Library Victoria resources. Most of them don't even need an account.

1. Many subjects go back to the early 2000s

2. Some reports include answers

3. On the maths subject pages, such as Methods, Specialist and General

4. Maths subjects include the formula sheet

5. Some cover several subjects, such as one for all the maths subjects

6. Question books from 2022 to 2025, with multiple-choice answers

7. Home database access needs a free digital library card, open to Victorian residents

VCAA and State Library Victoria websites, November 2026.

The first four sit together on one VCAA page for each subject, so for most of what you'll want, that page is the place to start.

Start with your subject's exam page

VCAA's past examinations and reports page lists each subject with an exam. Choosing yours opens a page set out in three parts:

  • Examination specifications and sample materials: how your exam is set out, plus sample questions written when the course last changed
  • Examinations relating to the current study design: recent papers, each with its report
  • Examinations relating to previous study designs: older papers and reports, grouped by year

Exams are PDFs, while recent reports and assessment guides are Word documents, and some of those are large files.

Check which papers match your course

Your teachers build your course from your subject's study design. Each study design applies for a set number of years before VCAA replaces or revises it, and VCAA's 2026 study design list (PDF) shows when each subject's current one started.

That's why each subject page splits its papers in two. VCAA says papers from before the current design are “not necessarily a guide to the current VCE examination”, because the course they were written for has since changed.

Which exam years match the current study design

Each pill shows one end-of-year exam year, as listed on the subject's VCAA page.

  • English: exams from 2024 to 2025 match the current study design; earlier years follow a previous design.
  • Mathematical Methods: exams from 2023 to 2025 match the current study design; earlier years follow a previous design.
  • Biology: exams from 2022 to 2025 match the current study design; earlier years follow a previous design.

Older papers can still have questions on topics your course covers. Your teacher teaches from the current design, so they can usually tell you which questions still fit, which is often quicker than working it out from the study design yourself.

Read the report after the paper

Once you've tried a paper, you can compare your answers with what the examiners were looking for in its external assessment report. Some subjects, including English and Methods, also have videos about the 2024 exams from the chief assessor, the person in charge of marking.

For English, the assessment criteria and expected qualities explain how your exam is marked.

For a way to work through a paper and its report, step by step, see our guide to using VCE past exams to revise.

When you're ready to fit practice papers into your weeks, our weekly study planner lays them out around school, sport and work, and you can print or save it.

Two free sources beyond your subjects

Past GAT papers

The General Achievement Test (GAT) is a pen-and-paper test of general knowledge and skills in writing, numeracy and reasoning. You sit it if you're doing Units 3 and 4 of a VCE subject. VCAA says no special study is needed, so the past GAT papers are mainly a way to see what the test looks like before you sit it.

Our guide to the GAT explains what it's for and how it's used.

State Library Victoria

For subjects with research tasks, the State Library's VCE research guides are a place to start. Its free video series for VCE students shows how to search them, in episodes of about ten minutes on topics such as English and literature, Australian history and databases for psychology and the sciences.

Who can help you make the most of them

Your subject teacher is the first person to ask about any of this, from what a line in a report means for your own answers to whether they'd look over a practice answer. Your school librarian can tell you what else the library has for VCE students, and your VCE coordinator can help if you're unsure which study design applies to you.

If a subject keeps stopping you at the same kind of question even after reading the report, it can help to work through it one-to-one. Our tutors at TMJ Tutoring do that at home or online, working from your own course outline, class notes and assessment dates rather than a fixed program.

Your own subject's page, and the most recent paper on it, is a good place to begin, whenever you're ready.

Other questions about free VCE resources

When will the 2026 exams be online?

VCAA adds papers and reports as they become available. You can check your subject's page again in early 2027.

How do I open the files on my phone?

VCAA suggests choosing “download” rather than “view” when your phone asks.

What are the papers marked NHT?

They're extra papers from the Northern Hemisphere Timetable, a separate sitting of VCE exams. VCAA says it no longer offers that sitting, but its past papers and reports may still be useful. Where an NHT paper sits under the current study design, it gives you one more paper written for your course.
