How much does tutoring cost?

Accepted Answer

Sessions run from about $60 to $90 an hour, GST inclusive, with online sessions priced a little lower. The exact rate depends on the year level and subject. We price in-home sessions a little higher because we rate face-to-face as the strongest way to tutor, not because of extra admin. There is no hidden fee structure and no surprise costs after the first conversation.

Are your tutors properly vetted?

Every tutor holds a valid Working with Children Check before they meet a student, and we keep a copy on file. Before anyone joins, we sit down with them properly. That interview is where we pay attention to how someone explains an idea and whether they listen more than they talk.

We are always glad to see a strong ATAR and strong study scores, and most of our tutors have them. But what makes a session work is whether your child feels comfortable with the person beside them. That is the thing we are really selecting for.

Is there a lock-in contract?

There is no lock-in contract. You pay as you go and can stop any time, no prepayment required.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is about getting to know your child and finding the right approach for how they learn. If you're not completely satisfied after the first session, there's no obligation to continue and we'll provide a full refund.

Do you offer online tutoring, or only in-home?

Accepted Answer

Both. 66%+ of sessions happen in the home, because most families find face-to-face works best, but online sessions are available everywhere and suit some families better.

When should we start tutoring?

Accepted Answer

There is no wrong time to start. Some families begin early to build strong habits, others come to us closer to exams or when a specific topic gets hard. Starting a little earlier gives more time to build momentum before assessments, but a late start still helps.

How does tutor matching actually work?

Accepted Answer

We call your family within 24 hours of your enquiry to talk through your child's year level, subject and how they learn best. From there we come back with a small number of tutor options already working nearby or online, rather than leaving you to pick from a list. A small internal team makes the match and stays involved afterwards, so you are not left guessing who is coming or why.

What if the tutor is not the right fit?

Let us know and we will find someone better suited. There is no lock-in and no penalty for changing, and the first-session guarantee covers you if it is clear early on that the match is not working.

Do you only tutor VCE students, or younger years too?

Accepted Answer

We cover primary, years 7 to 10, VCE and IB, across more than 45 subjects. Whatever year your child is in, there is very likely a tutor for it.

What subjects do you cover?

We tutor more than 45 subjects, from the core subjects like English and maths through to sciences, humanities and languages, across primary, years 7 to 10, VCE and IB. If you are not sure whether we cover something specific, ask. Chances are we do.

What does a TMJ tutor actually look like?

Most of our tutors are current university students who did well in the exact subjects they now teach, usually not long out of school themselves. Every one has sat down with our team for an interview before taking a student, and every one holds a valid Working with Children Check.

Are your tutors still studying what they teach?

Many are. A large share of our subject tutors are currently studying a related field at university, whether that is science, maths, law or commerce, so the material is still fresh in their own heads. The subject pages have more detail on this for specific subjects.

What areas do you cover?

We started in Melbourne's inner south-east, and that is still where we have the deepest tutor coverage, but we now work with families right across metropolitan Melbourne, in-home and online. If you want to check your specific suburb, the area pages linked from here have the detail.

How are your tutors qualified?

They did well in the subjects they teach. Four in five are studying at the University of Melbourne or Monash, most of them not long out of school themselves, so they are teaching material they learned recently.

Before anyone takes a student they sit down with our team for an interview, and every tutor holds a valid Working with Children Check. Every tutor also works through TMJ's own training material before their first session, covering how to run a session, how to structure a term and what to do when a student is stuck.
