Helping your child settle into Year 7
Keep conversations open, listen to worries and help your child find a trusted adult at school. A simple routine and time to rest can make the new workload easier to manage. Raising Children Network recommends supporting both old friendships and opportunities to meet new people.
Look out for avoiding school, feeling unwell before school, withdrawing from conversations about friends, or losing confidence. Talk with the homeroom or form teacher, Year 7 coordinator or wellbeing team if you are concerned. You do not need to wait until the end of term to ask for support.

Use the separate Year 6 placement section at the end of this checklist. Check the 2028 placement timeline when the Department of Education publishes it. Follow that timeline and your school’s instructions rather than deadlines for 2027 entry. Government primary schools coordinate applications; families at non-government primary schools or home schooling should contact their preferred government secondary school.
For Victorian government schools welcoming Year 7 students in 2027, the statewide orientation day is Tuesday 8 December 2026. Confirm arrival times, campus and what to bring with your school. Other schools may use different dates or offer additional transition visits.
Check the school's device specifications and loan options before buying. For public transport, under-18s can travel free with a Youth myki. Follow Transport Victoria's current instructions and ask the school separately about school bus arrangements.
A separate test is not a general requirement of government Year 7 placement. Ask individual schools about any specialist program or scholarship application. Victoria's four selective entry high schools cater for Years 9–12, so their entry process is separate from starting Year 7.
