NAPLAN results explained
Understand your child’s report and find a useful next step with their teacher.
Enter your child’s levels
Choose the year on the report, then the level for each area. You can leave any area blank.
How to read the report
Since 2023, NAPLAN uses four proficiency levels across five areas. Spelling and grammar and punctuation have separate results. Levels reflect year-level expectations at testing, not every skill a child has mastered. The black dot is your child’s result, the triangle the national average, and the shaded box the middle 60%. These are scale positions, not percentages correct. Use your report’s key for school averages.
Common questions
NAPLAN shows how your child went on one test. Read it alongside schoolwork and teacher feedback. The same level in a later year can still mean progress as expectations rise. Pre-2023 results cannot be directly compared. A technical disruption affected many Year 5, 7 and 9 writing tests on 11 March 2026. Discuss affected results with the teacher.
Testing ran 11 to 23 March 2026. Victorian schools received results on 13 July and distribute family reports. Ask the school if yours has not arrived.
Catch-ups cover missed tests within the test window; rescheduling covers disrupted, unfinished tests. Neither offers a later resit to improve results. Discuss surprising results alongside classroom assessments.
Victorian government schools covered by the Placement Policy cannot make local offers depend on NAPLAN or request results before offering a place. Selective entry schools use a separate exam. Check criteria for special-purpose and non-government schools.
Extra help is likely to be needed. Ask which skill comes first, what support the school will provide and how progress will be checked. Use classroom knowledge too. Other levels can also need support.
No. A level cannot give an exact rank. This tool does not estimate scores, percentiles or an overall grade. For skill examples, use the official descriptions for the relevant year and area.
